It is also informed by insights generated in recently completed research (Tantiniranat, 2017) into the perceptions of TESOL practitioners in Thai HE regarding the purposes of their teaching and the paradigms underpinning it. In particular, in order to enhance coherence between policy directions and classroom practices, we are proposing that English language educators might consider repositioning the purposes of their teaching so that English is taught as an International Language (EIL) used for face-to-face and online Intercultural Communication (IC) rather than a Foreign Language for exams and/or academic purposes. We conclude with some suggestions for promoting this newly-articulated approach to Thai teachers of English.

A paper Khwan and Richard are co-writing has been accepted for a conference in Thailand in 2018.
