I am currently <\/span><span id=\"role_document\">reading the following\u00a0book:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lee, Anna (2012!). Successful research supervision: advising students doing research. London and New York, Routledge.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0it,\u00a0Lee\u00a0identifies five (potentially interconnected) supervisory approaches as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>(institutionally-oriented)\u00a0functional (relating to Code sof Practice, contractual obligations, organisational matters Panels etc);<\/li>\n<li>supporting enculturation;<\/li>\n<li>developing critical thinking;<\/li>\n<li>enabling emancipation; and<\/li>\n<li>creating a relationship.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For example, under Developing Critical Thinking, she has four aspects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an understanding of different beliefs about knowledge and an ability to assess statements in relation to these beliefs;<\/li>\n<li>an ability to define and evaluate the argument in a manner appropriate tro the relevant discipline(s);<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0an ablity to solve problems in a logical manner;<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>an ability to reflect metacognitively on performance.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I might add more detail to this summary if it is of interest to anyone.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder which of the five approaches you detect in your supervisory relationships?
