Are we teaching \/ are they learning? Academic writing blues. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Abstract<\/p>\n This paper will focus on the trials and tribulations of teaching academic composition to pre-university students, with reflections on student motivation and teacher expectations in the Qatari context. I intend to discuss means of stimulating student interest and creativity while maintaining adherence to academic standards of structure and integrity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Summary<\/p>\n In composition courses taught to pre-university Qatari students, we trip over hurdles, lose hope and fall into despair. We bemoan our students\u2019 lack of academic background and general knowledge, low motivation and disregard for essay structure and academic honesty. The students, in turn, complain about our rigid requirements, boring assignments and unrealistic expectations. We doubt our teaching and they wonder about their learning. How do we get out of the conundrum?\u00a0<\/p>\n In my paper, I would like to share some of my reflections regarding the above issues and offer possible solutions based on my teaching expertise, doctoral research and personal experience. I will present and explain selected academic composition assignments that have worked for both sides of the educational \u2018barricade\u2019.
