Book chapter for publication

I’m adding this short note because I can’t find the joint post I wrote with Magdalena and Mariam  (May 2013) about having our chapter proposals accepted for a forthcoming book on teacher identity.

Cases on Teacher Identity, Diversity, and Cognition in Higher Education is a book edited by Paul Breen, to be published by IGI Global by the end of 2014. Responding to his call for chapter proposals (LTE blog, March 2013), I offered an idea for a chapter on “Exploring identity of non-native teachers of English through narratives of their experience”. I submitted the final version of my chapter in October and it has now been approved for publication in 2014.

ABSTRACT: The teaching profession, particularly in the field of TESOL, seems to be in the midst of transition, with teachers facing questions in regard to content, methods, audience, underlying principles and goals of their teaching and, perhaps most importantly, their own professional identity in and out of the classroom. I explore the issue of teacher identity and position in the fast-changing setting of the Qatari educational system, based on my own story as a non-native English speaking teacher of English in Qatar and incorporating other NNES teachers’ narratives. Using interviews and focused analysis of teachers’ stories, I investigate commonalities and contrasts in the way we formulate and practise our teaching philosophies, examining how we are/can be teachers, native and non-native alike, in the TESOL landscape of Qatar.
