The English tone of voice: Lecture with David Crystal, University of Huddersfield, Friday 13th May

Babel is pleased to announce our second annual lecture, which will be given by David Crystal. The lecture will take place on the 13th May, 2016 in the beautiful surroundings of St Paul’s Hall at the University of Huddersfield, and is free for all to attend.

David Crystal is a celebrated linguist, as well as being Babel’s very own Linguistic Consultant. He has published widely on languages and linguistics, with encyclopedic works such as The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Linguistics and accessible introductions to aspects of English such as The Stories of English and the recent Making a Point, a history of English punctuation. David has also been published in Babel, with articles ontraveling Britain as an English language tourist and unravelling the sound of Shakespeare’s plays.

David’s lecture is titled ‘The English Tone of Voice’, and will explore what phonetics and the analysis of tone can tell us about just about everything, including sex, spies and Star Wars.

The lecture will also mark the publication of the fifteenth issue of Babel. If you have not yet subscribed to our 2016 issues, visit our subscribe page – we’ll send you the hot-off-the-press issue 14  and also make sure you have issue 15 in time for the lecture!
