Job Opportunity: Lectureship in Sociolinguistics at Birkbeck College

The Department of Applied Linguistics and Communication (ALC), Birkbeck College, University of London invites applications for a lectureship with a track record and relatively extensive experience in the research area of Sociolinguistics.

 

We would welcome applicants with expertise in the study of sociolinguistics in multilingual and intercultural contexts, particularly, in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Language variation and change
  2. Language contact
  3. World Englishes
  4. Language and migration
  5. Social Psychology of Language
  6. Political discourse

 

The main responsibilities are to contribute to the research-led teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the area of Sociolinguistics, to provide undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD supervision in the relevant areas, and to participate in Departmental, School and College administration as required, and to carry out independent research activities in the relevant areas at a level submittable in the Research Excellence Framework.

 

Candidate Requirements

You will have a PhD in Linguistics or related areas and, preferably, a proven record in research supervision, as well as some experience in designing and delivering research-led taught courses in Sociolinguistics. You will have a track record of research publications in international, refereed journals, and preferably, experience in seeking external research grant income and public engagement.
