Sahar, Rafidah (PhD alumna)
Hello everyone! I am Rafidah Sahar from Malaysia. I am coming to the University of Manchester as a Phd student in September, 2013. I obtained a Bachelor degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Warwick University, UK and attained a Master degree in English Literature from University of Malaya in Malaysia. Being involved in the education line at the International Islamic University Malaysia for almost a decade now, I have been given the opportunity to meet and interact with students who come from different Asian countries such as China, Indonesia, Thailand, and also Middle East Countries. From my experience, these students managed to adapt well to the cultural differences and learning styles in Malaysia. This maybe due to the similarities in values, beliefs and customs among most Asian and Muslim countries. Hence, this has sparked my interest to pursue a doctoral paper in Intercultural Communication field, in which my study will look at the acculturation strategies among female Asian students studying in the British University context. The crux of the study is to find out their acculturative stressors and how they cope with the cultural differences in relations to their ICC.
That’s all from me for now. I look forward to meeting all of you in September.

Hi Rafidah! I’m looking forward to meeting you at our school. Let me know if you need anything.
It would be well worth taking a look at the work of former LTE Doctoral member Xiaowei Zhou (‘Vivien) whose profile can be seen in Wider Membership’ drop-down menu. Viv is now teaching at Edinburgh Napier university and is in contact but not a frequent blog visitor. If you find her work looks interesting, I can put you in contact more directly.
