My Viva Experience: Preparation and Practice
Having recently gone through my PhD viva (outcome – Minor corrections), I want to share my preparation, practice, and the mindset that helped me approach this significant day with confidence and resilience. Practice played a vital role in my preparation. I began with three presentations over a week, sharing my thesis with the LANTERN community. These sessions helped me transition into a preparation mindset, refine my ability to present my ideas clearly, and gather questions from peers that challenged my thinking.
Following these initial presentations, I focused on becoming deeply familiar with my thesis. Two weeks before my viva, I began a systematic reading routine. In the first week, I read my thesis from start to finish five times to ensure I understood every detail and nuance. During this period, I also had three mock vivas with my supervisor Richard. The first mock viva took place after I had completed one full read-through of my thesis, the second after three read-throughs, and the third after five. These mock sessions were incredibly helpful in simulating the viva environment, testing my ability to articulate clear responses, and identifying areas where I needed improvement. After each mock viva, I summarized the questions I felt I hadn’t answered well, then worked specifically on those areas. I made notes and wrote down key points for my responses to help reinforce my preparation.
Once I had completed the full readings, I switched to a chapter-by-chapter approach. For example, I read Chapter 1 three times, then Chapter 2 three times, and so on. After that, I did one final complete read-through of the thesis (though I didn’t quite finish it in the end). Throughout this process, I reflected on potential questions I might be asked, drawing on insights from my practice sessions with my supervisor and discussions within my academic community.
On the morning of my viva, as I made my way to the university, I noticed people heading to a graduation ceremony. Seeing families congratulating their loved ones and celebrating their success was a moving scene. I felt happy for them and even got a bit emotional. It reminded me of how significant these milestones are and how much effort goes into reaching them. Across from the building, I saw that an IELTS test was taking place. I thought to myself, “Okay, I’m not the only one having an exam today!” This moment brought back memories of the time when I was preparing for my IELTS test, and I reflected on how far I had come—from those early preparation days to now standing on the threshold of my PhD viva.
The viva itself was both challenging and rewarding. I focused on staying calm, listening carefully to each question, and responding thoughtfully. I had previously heard the advice to only answer a question when you fully understand it, but during the viva, I did rush my response once. When the examiner repeated the question, I paused, apologized, and gave a better response. This moment reminded me that it’s okay to make mistakes—what truly matters is how you recover and move forward. I didn’t let this minor slip-up affect my confidence or energy.
Reflecting on my experience, I have a few tips for those preparing for their viva. First, value your academic community. Whether through presentations, informal discussions, or mock vivas, their support and feedback can significantly enhance your preparation. Second, practice as much as possible. Mock vivas can be nerve-wracking, but they help you build confidence and refine your ability to handle challenging questions. Third, visualize the state you want to embody during your viva. It can make a real difference in how you present yourself. Trust in your preparation, take one question at a time, and approach the experience with curiosity and collaboration.
By preparing thoroughly, practicing diligently, and maintaining composure, you can transform this daunting experience into a proud milestone in your academic career.
Last, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisors and the LANTERN community for their invaluable support throughout my preparation.
Thank you, LANTERN community!
