Faculty Forum at HBKU
I’m happy to share the news that my proposal for a presentation at the Qatar Faculty Forum has been accepted. It will take place next semester, in the fall of 2013 (date tbd), at the Carnegie-Mellon University in Qatar.
The QFF is a body composed of faculty members of Education City branch universities (now officially referred to as partner universities of Hamad bin Khalifa University, HBKU). They meet about once a month to share their latest research in a mini conference.
Here is the abstract of my presentation.
Plagiarism and culture
Plagiarism is a serious academic offence in the West, but not all cultures and their educational systems view it in the same way. The resulting conflict of interests between respecting cultural differences and trying to uphold academic standards poses a challenge for many western educational establishments catering for international students who come from diverse backgrounds and traditions. This presentation examines the views on the issue taken by pre-university, mostly Arab, students at the Academic Bridge Program. It discusses the issue of plagiarism as related to culture and proposes measures to address the problem of plagiarism in a multi-cultural educational context.
