PG Studentships: Language and Intercultural Communication (2017 entry)

The Department of Language and Communication Studies at the University of East Anglia (UEA) invites applications from students wishing to pursue postgraduate research in language and communication (October 2017 entry).

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION AT UEA

In line with UEA’s tradition of interdisciplinary research, our research and supervision focus on four interrelated and complementary areas of enquiry:

Translating and interpreting, particularly: ethics and ‘real-world’ translation practice in legal, health, sports and other professional contexts; pragmatics-driven approaches to audio-visual translation and film subtitling; the pragmatics and translation of religious and literary texts).

Language, intercultural communication and cross-cultural pragmatics, particularly: communication practice in media, political, religious, educational and professional contexts with specific reference to cross- and inter-cultural variation, politeness, gender and the origin and resolution of conflict in international politics and media; ancient Egyptian philology and sociolinguistics; language teaching and curriculum development research with a focus on intercultural communication pedagogy and citizenship education; theoretical pragmatics, semantics-pragmatics interface and formal models of dialogue.

SFL-based or other forms of (critical) discourse and metaphor analysis, specifically ideological representation and power differentials in the discourse of media, advertising, politics and professional communication; the analysis of empathy and person/patient-centred communication in health or other professional domains.

Cross-cultural cognitive linguistics, specifically the relationship between cognitive and psychological processes and language production and reception, including forensic linguistics and second language acquisition and applications to translation and interpreting practice.

For further details of the topics supervised, please see the individual academic’s people page:

We also have strong interdisciplinary links with colleagues working in other specialist areas at UEA, including literary translation, literature and creative writing, film, television and media studies, politics, philosophy, education, health and business. In the field of literary translation we have links with The British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT) to which a number of our staff are affiliated. These relationships enable us to supervise students wishing to write their theses on areas that cross disciplinary boundaries. In the field of language education, health communication and in-work communication, we have links with the School of Education and Lifelong Learning, the School of Health Sciences and the Norwich Business School, which also enable us to co-supervise students researching pedagogical aspects relating to language, intercultural and citizenship education, health and work-related communication.

THERE ARE FOUR MAIN AVENUES TOWARDS PHD FUNDS:

CHASE STUDENTSHIPS

UEA is part of the CHASE AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership (alongside the Courtauld Institute of Art, Goldsmiths, University of London, the Open University and the Universities of Essex, Kent and Sussex, with Birkbeck and SOAS as associate members) and successful applicants for PhD study will be able to apply for studentship funding. CHASE offers 75 studentships for October 2017 entry. For further details on eligibility and how to apply, please visit: http://www.chase.ac.uk/apply

In order to apply for CHASE, candidates must have first secured the support of a prospective supervisor based at UEA, since a CHASE application is prepared jointly by student and supervisor. Applicants must also have applied online for a PhD programme at UEA: they will then be required to make an additional online application within the CHASE portal.

Applications for funding will be considered by the Faculty of Humanities, which will put the best applicants forward to the CHASE selection panels for the final allocation of studentships.

UK students: a CHASE studentship covers both fees and maintenance. The funding will cover professional development opportunities, including the enhancement of public engagement skills and placements with CHASE partner organisations in the UK and overseas.

EU students: a CHASE studentship covers fees only. At present, the studentship allocation process and the terms and conditions of awards have not been in any way affected by Brexit and PhD students with a 2016 start date have been informed that their funding is confirmed for the whole duration of their course of study. Until directives for 2017 are issued by the UK Government, no changes to the immigration status of EU students are going to be effective (the Lisbon Treaty sets out a two year negotiation process between the UK and other Member States, during which time the terms of exit from the European Union will be decided.).

Any immigration policy changes will be clearly communicated by UEA to students in writing, if and when formal governmental directives are confirmed.

SeNSS STUDENTSHIPS

UEA is part of the South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (alongside City University London, University of Essex, Goldsmiths, University of London, University of Kent, Reading University, Roehampton University, Royal Holloway, University of London, University of Surrey, University of Sussex) and successful applicants for PhD study will be able to apply for studentship funding. SeNSS offers 3 studentships in linguistics for October 2017 entry. Applications are welcome for both full and part-time modes of study as well as cross-institutional supervision arrangements. Awards are available on a ‘+3’ basis (standard PhD studentship) for those who already have a Master degree with an extensive research methods component or on a ‘1+3’ basis (1-year Master, followed by 3-year PhD). You should discuss these options with your prospective PhD supervisor and/or School PGR Director. For further details on eligibility and how to apply, please go to: https://www.uea.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/research-degrees/doctoral-training-partnerships/senss-dtp-studentships

To be considered for one of these awards, you must submit an electronic application through both the UEA system and the CHASE system by 5pm (GMT) on 11 January 2017. CHASE funding-related enquires, as well as requests for CHASE login details should be directed to Daphne Rayment at: ahrc.chaseapplications@uea.ac.uk

In order to apply for SeNSS, candidates must have first secured the support of a prospective supervisor based at UEA, since a SeNSS application is prepared jointly by student and supervisor. Applicants must also have applied online for a PhD programme at UEA (and an MA programme, if applicable): they will then be required to make an additional online application within the SeNSS portal.

UK students: a SeNSS studentship covers both fees and maintenance. The funding will cover research training support and you will additionally be given access to other funds to be used for overseas fieldwork, overseas institutional visits, difficult language training etc.

EU students: a SeNSS studentship generally covers tuition fees, research training support access to other funds to be used for overseas fieldwork, overseas institutional visits, difficult language training etc. but no maintenance. At present, the studentship allocation process and the terms and conditions of awards have not been in any way affected by Brexit and PhD students with a 2017 start date have been informed that their funding is confirmed for the whole duration of their course of study.

In order to be considered for a SeNSS ESRC Studentship, you must make TWO applications: ONE to your chosen institution, for a place at that institution to study for your PhD (and MA, if applicable) and one ONE to the SeNSS DTP, for funding for studying for your PhD (and MA, if applicable).

The institutional deadline for applications to start in October 2017 is midnight on 16th January 2017.  SeNSS funding-related enquires, as well as requests for SeNSS login details should be directed to Ms Melanie Steele at: m.steele@uea.ac.uk
